History tells us that the Roman and British Empires were two of the greatest the western world has ever seen. At its apogee, the Roman Empire included all land surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, and reached as far as England in northern Europe and Syria in the Near East. At its height the British Empire covered a quarter of the earth's land surface, an empire over which the sun famously never set.
