Abstract

Many eons ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I enrolled in a university programme leading to a Master of Arts degree. One of my fellow students was Iranian, Haddid (pronounced Hadeed). Sporting a crisp white shirt, conservative tie, polite, hard-working, but also hard-of-hearing, Haddid exuded an olde-worlde dignity in contrast to the grubby ethos of plate-glass universities in the UK in the 1970s.
