The colourful chart (Figure 1) gives the annual returns for each of the major investable asset classes in South Africa for the past ten years. A quick glance shows that the best-performing asset class in 1999 was South African shares (red), whereas the poorest performer was international bonds (purple). Interestingly, nine years later in 2008, this position is reversed, with international bonds in the top spot and SA shares at the bottom. In the years between, there seems to be no discernible pattern, but rather a random distribution of colour blocks.
