Abstract

This article focuses on whether school governing bodies (SGBs) are democratic in their operations. It also attempts to uncover some of the challenges faced by SGBs in the promotion of democratic practices in school governance. Through the lens of democratic schooling, this article seeks to make meaning of the operations of SGBs. A mixed methods approach was used to generate data. A self-administered survey questionnaire was used to generate quantitative data and focus group interviews were used to generate qualitative data. The findings indicate that SGBs are in fact democratic in their operations. However, there are challenges faced by SGBs in the promotion of democratic practices. This article therefore recommends that support in the form of focused training workshops be provided for SGBs.
