Abstract

Africa needs military leaders with an in depth understanding of security on the continent. Strongly linked to this insight would be a view of African military forces being a safety net to provide a framework within which peace in Africa can be negotiated. Military leaders of Africa should also facilitate a military network to protect peace and stability and influence political leaders to develop the continent to its full potential. Within this broader picture South Africa needs a group of military leaders to transform the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to be the most respected military force in Africa for conventional war as well as peacekeeping operations. The focus of this research is to investigate the level of potential, level of verbal, English knowledge and English comprehension, as well as the personality and leadership profiles with the occurrence of psychopathology of students at the South African Military Academy (SAMA). The research evaluates a sample of 48 students from a population of 380 residential students at the institution. The results show an average potential with an average level of verbal, English knowledge and English comprehension ability of these students at the SAMA. Certain vulnerabilities in the personality and leadership profiles are also indicated by the results. The main recommendations from these results are to change the marketing strategy of the South African National Defence Force to bring the average A- and B-candidates of Grade 12 to SAMA and to change the psychometric battery used during the selection of first years.
