oa Modern Medicine - Joint aspiration and injection in the management of arthritis

Abstract

Several tests can be performed on synovial fluid obtained by joint aspiration; the three that should be performed routinely are the white blood cell count with differential, the crystal examination, and the Grams stain and culture. From these tests, inflammatory and noninflammatory arthritis can be differentiated, gout and pseudogout can be definitely diagnosed, and septic arthritis can be confirmed.
