Although the causes of asthma are unknown, patients with persistent disease, no matter how mild, have inflamed airways characterized by thickening of airway walls and the presence of eosinophils. In this article, the term ï¿½asthmaï¿½ refers to the underlying disease and not to the symptoms caused by airway narrowing.
