Abstract

Changes in the lens of the eye leading to decrease in light transmission and ultimately to clinical cataract are a normal concomitant of the ageing process, although factors such as excessive exposure to ultraviolet light, defective nutrition and metabolic abnormalities may play a significant part in accelerating cataract formation in certain populations.
