Thyroid nodules are very common, but only a small percentage require the surgeon's knife. Indications for surgery include the risk of malignancy, the presence of local obstructive symptoms, retrosternal nodules, thyrotoxicosis, cosmetic considerations and a history of previous head and neck irradiation.
