Abstract

To attain the early slaughter dates used in modern broiler operation, broilers are selected for accelerated growth rates. This selection is in part as a result of the selection for increased feed intake by modern broilers. One of the consequences of an increase in feed intake in modern broilers is an increase in the supply of nutrients in the lumen of the broiler’s gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Any disruption of intestinal digestion and absorption will increase the supply of nutrients to the hindgut. This will create an environment conducive for intestinal overgrowth of potential pathogenic hindgut bacteria, such as the Clostridiaceae group of bacteria and Escherichia coli.
