Abstract

The ancient Greek philosopher and scientist, Aristotle, could just as well have been referring to the importance of well-classed wool with his famous quote: ‘Well begun is half done’. In the June edition of Stockfarm we homed in on the South African wool classification system, sharing advice and shearing tips by the National Wool Growers’ Association and Cape Wools SA. Among others, the article centred around the minimum requirements for wool classing, the South African shearing standard, taking ownership to guarantee quality and the reasons and implications of diminishing quality. Paul Lynch, vice-chairman of Cape Wools and the owner of Standard Wool in Port Elizabeth, shifts the focus in this article to the reason why producers should understand the importance of wellclassed wool.
