Measured performance plays a major role in the breeding policy of a Limpopo-based Brahman breeder who bred the Champion of Champions bull showed at the African Livestock Trade Fair (Alfa) Expo, held in Parys in the Free State in 2016. The Brahman bull, Sir Hercules BAR 13/80, kicked dust in the eyes of the country’s elite beef bulls. Not only is he a splendid specimen, but performance testing shows that he can also be of great value in any breeding programme. Willem and Adri Barnard of Rondeboschje near Potgietersrus (Mokopane) in Limpopo, decided early on that not only do they wish to breed beautiful animals in their Wilbar stud, but they want to breed the very best Brahmans. Therefore no animal is included in their show string unless it has aboveaverage performance figures. Their animals were also the first Brahmans to receive the new B-brand.
