The countries that lie north of us – the snowcovered, cold and wet parts of the United States (US) and Europe – have always been the place where technology, the foundation of our livestock breeds and the correct way of doing things, originated from. This is why my first international exposure to agriculture was in the US and the Netherlands – and I clearly remember the differences rather than the similarities between us and them, because literally everything is different. Their climate, soil and markets are all different. Yet we tend to pursue their technology and principles, while finding it difficult to apply these systems to South Africa.
