Abstract

Driving down the dirt road to Tipperary, the farm of Wessel van Wyk, it is clear that he is one of those farmers whose farm you can visit at any time to find that everything is in perfect order. Wessel is the owner of Bogermie Farming and Bonsmara stud, and one of the winners in the SA Stud Book Veeplaas Elite Platinum Bull awards. In 1982 he took the step of inviting the Bonsmara society to perform his first basic selection. “We selected mostly female Afrikaner cattle, but it was here that the Bonsmara bug bit me and I started dreaming of building a stud that I could be proud of,” says Wessel. He was fortunate to have the wellknown Bonsmara breeder, Robert Taute, as a mentor. Robert’s farm was only a stone’s throw from his. It was easy to seek his advice or to test his views against that of a man who has already gone the way of selections, matings, calvings, weaning calves, selecting bulls and marketing.
