It is often said that the quality and availability of roughage have a direct effect on the success of sheep and cattle enterprises. From a nutrition perspective, better quality roughage given at the required inclusion levels, can significantly reduce the cost of feeding high-producing animals. Ruminants can unlock a major portion of the nutritional value in the fibre component of roughage and use it for maintenance, production and reproduction. Better quality roughage means higher energy density and is usually also associated with higher protein density. Roughage also sometimes contains significant amounts of protein, which is crucial for normal functioning and production. If these nutrients are unlocked efficiently, fewer grains and oilcake is necessary in concentrates, leading to a significant saving on feed costs.
