The Centre for Petroleum, Energy Economics and Law (CPEEL), University of Ibadan was established in July 2011 as a John D and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation funded Regional Centre of Excellence with the main goal of training highly skilled personnel and conducting research on energy. It is the only institution of its kind in Africa. CPEEL is in collaboration with the Department of Economics, Department of Petroleum Engineering and Faculty of Law at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria.
The Centre is multidisciplinary in concept and practice. It brings together economists, engineers, lawyers, finance experts, scientists and other relevant energy professionals in order to address energy issues in a holistic and collaborative manner. The flagship of the Centre is graduate training leading to the awards of Master and Doctorate degrees in Energy Studies and as part of the Centre's vision of producing highly skilled personnel who have a balanced understanding of theory and practice in the energy sector, students are required to undertake brief internships to gain firsthand experience in the sector.
