n Journal of Public Administration - Enhancing the communication competency of senior managers in the South African public service




Communication competency is one of the eleven key management competencies constituting the performance management and development framework for Senior Managers in the South African Public Service. The communication phenomenon is complex and multi-faceted as evidenced by the communication competency definition and proficiency levels. Persuasion coupled with conversation and dialogue could be regarded as driving forces for effective communication, however, there are barriers to overcome. This article attempts in highlighting and discussing key concepts and processes that will enhance the insights of senior public service managers. Communication as a human activity carried out by human beings can be impact-driven and successful by having an understanding of emotional intelligence, diversity in the workplace and vigilant ethical behaviour.
