Abstract

The FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup has been regarded as highly successful both in the eyes of the FIFA bosses and South Africans, as well as in the eyes of the world. This successful hosting of an event of such magnitude has further put South Africa on an international pedestal in that governments around the world are convinced of the ability of South Africa to champion and uphold its own developmental initiatives. As a matter of fact, the hosting of this global event also meant that South Africa is the only country in the world that has hosted the three major world cup events of cricket, rugby and soccer. This is an important milestone in considering the skills level and competency of the South African government to accelerate public service delivery. However, this has not always been the case as there is always a space to effect governance and service delivery improvements. This issue contains a wide variety of articles that engage relevant aspects to which the government of South Africa needs to pay attention in order to address its socio-economic malaise. In this regard, Mle and Qwase consider the efficacy of the portfolio committees of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature. This article concludes by considering ways in which relations between portfolio committees and provincial government officials could be ameliorated.
