Abstract

Africa is the only continent which has its own comprehensive regional instrument for the promotion and protection of children's rights. This instrument, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (African Children's Charter), provides that its implementation and monitoring are supervised by the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (African Children's Committee or Committee). The 11-member African Children's Committee was inaugurated in May 2002 and by the end of 2006, it had held eight ordinary sessions. The Committee meets in bi-annual ordinary sessions in spring and autumn.
