Abstract

Sport has, since the earliest times, been fraught with the potential for injury. Improvements in training methods and the use of banned anabolic agents to increase strength, have also created an increased risk of injury. Over time, the rules of most sports have been refined and various measures have been taken to limit or reduce the potential for serious injury to participants. In spite of all the best efforts, serious injuries still can and do occur from time to time. The rules for the safety of players are worthless if they are not observed by players and enforced by referees on the field of play.
