Yet another case in which the relationship between a bank and its client came under the spotlight has reached the law reports. The core issue in First National Bank of SA Ltd v Duvenhage (the decision of the court a quo was reported under the citation of Duvenhage v Eerste Nasionale Bank van SA Bpk 2005 4 All SA 41 (N); and that of the court on appeal under the citation of First National Bank of SA Ltd v Duvenhage 2006 5 SA 369 (SCA)) was the common-law duty of care that rests on a bank not to cause damage to its client through its negligence.
