A theoretical discussion of the AIDS pandemic in South Africa is best done against the background of a straight-forward statistical analysis. The facts, simple and stark, speak for themselves: at the moment South Africa has the highest number of people living with HIV in the world. A government survey, conducted in October 2005, estimates that 5.5 million South Africans are living with the virus, accounting for more than one-eighth of the estimated cases worldwide (see the Human Science Research Council report at and the estimates produced by the latest Actuarial Society of South Africa computer model at ).
