During the past decade the principles underlying the law of estoppel have gained in importance and received new attention in numerous legal systems irrespective of the name under which these principles are classified in a particular system. This holds true for so-called codified continental systems as well as the classical uncodified systems. The hybrid legal systems, of which Scottish and South African law are the most important examples, form no exception to this trend.
