In observing the importance of the rule of law, Bingham stated the following: "The hallmarks of a regime which flouts the rule of law are, alas, all too familiar: the midnight knock on the door, the sudden disappearance, the show trial, the subjection of prisoners to genetic experimentation, the confession extracted by torture, the gulag and the concentration camp, the gas chamber, the practice of genocide or ethnic cleansing, the waging of aggressive war. It is a revised and updated fourth edition which focuses on supplying police officials with knowledge and understanding of criminal law, criminal procedure and the law of evidence. This corpus of information is conveyed against the backdrop of the constitution and other relevant legislation, in particular the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977. The book consists of 20 chapters.
