The book covers the whole of Kathrada's life and the political times he experienced, with a lot of attention paid to the prison experience, often amusing, but also treating some of the ideological divisions which have only recently been admitted publicly. It is strongest in its moments of introspection, but is an important addition to the literature of struggle, providing new source material for future researchers.
