Until the late 1980s, the politics of elections in Central America were linked to the prevalence of dictatorships, military rulers and warfare. For many years political leaders mobilised to gain the right to vote or to participate in free and fair elections. With the end of the wars in the region and the spread of civil and political freedoms, these countries entered into a process of democratisation of which elections continue to be an important part.
