n Latin American Report - Bridging the South Atlantic divide : geopolitical conceptualisations of inter-regional co-operation : research article

Paradoxically, in the context of lateral sub-Saharan Africa-South America relations, the South Atlantic has been both a bridge and a divide. On the one hand, the notion of inter-regional South Atlantic co-operation has always had an intuitive logic to it. On the other hand, it is debatable whether the post-Cold War significance of the South Atlantic provides a necessary and sufficient basis for viable inter-regional integration. Based on a re-assessment of geopolitical thinking concerning ocean areas in a globalising world, with particular reference to the South Atlantic, the conceptualisation as well as the prospects and constraints of inter-regional co-operation are considered. Hence this article provides a macro-overview of inter-regional South Atlantic co-operation viewed from a South African geopolitical perspective.
