Abstract

World-renowned Brazilian economist Celso Monteiro Furtado died in Rio de Janeiro on 20 November 2004. He was highly regarded for his theories of development economics. His most famous book, (1958), has influenced generations of economists and social scientists in the developing world. Celso Furtado was born in Pombal in the impoverished north-eastern state of Paraíba. He went to Rio de Janeiro to study law and after graduating he served in the Brazilian Expeditionary Forces in Italy in World War II.
