A new exhibit celebrates Haitian expatriates' bond with their homeland Haiti has always been an enigma. The second independent country in the Americas and the first created by former slaves, today it is the hemisphere's poorest nation. Nevertheless, its eroded, treeless landscape has produced one of the region's most vibrant artistic traditions. Haiti's people are also enigmatic. Though proud and patriotic, many have abandoned their homeland to build new lives in distant lands. Among them are artists who work far from their place of birth, yet remain unmistakeably Haitian.
