Abstract

Unlike its older sister anthology from the same publishing house - Andersen et al.'s - this one offers a useful introduction to the first-time tertiary student of English poetry. It includes a concise overview of English history and literature which should alleviate, at least to some extent, the lack of an historical sense among most of the current enrolments at universities in the country. (Gone are the days when one could assume that students would know more or less what the Copernican revolution involved.) It is not a bad idea to begin an introductory anthology for Southern African students with a contextualization such as this.
