Abstract

This article deals with two prose collections of Elias P. Nel, namely and , which were published in 1998 en 2001 respectively. These two works of regional literature contain altogether 35 short-prose texts which are essentially narrations and/or anecdotes. The stories are set primarily in the former north-western Cape Province (currently known as Northern Cape), in particular Verneukpan (Swartkop) and surrounding areas in Bushmanland, and focus on different aspects of the then way of life of working-class people in this region. The stories are told by a primary narrator (who appears to be the fictional correlate of the implied author) and a number of secondary narrators. Organisationally, the stories of these secondary narrators are embedded in those of the primary narrator.
