Portraits of and conversations with fathers : the father-daughter relationship in the poetry of a few female poetsThis paper investigates the father-daughter relationship in the poetry of four canonised female poets in Afrikaans, namely, Elisabeth Eybers, Olga Kirsch, Lina Spies and Joan Hambidge. The theoretical point of departure is underpinned by views on sexuality and in particular the complex relation between father and daughter in the work of Freud, Lacan and Kristeva. Issues such as the admission to the Symbolic Order, the role of the mother as abject, and the importance of the male subject in the work of Freud and Kristeva with regard to sexuality is also discussed.Evident from the analysis is the fact that in the poems about the father-daughter relationship in the work of all four poets there is a strong preoccupation with religion and the role of the father as representative of the so-called law-of-the-father/Father.
