Under my thumb : the delicate syntacs of your throat. Krog in dialogue with Pablo PicassoMetatextual commentary on paintings by Marlene Dumas and Pablo Picasso is the theme of a number of ecphrastic poems in the section ""Skilderysonnette e.a."" (Painting sonnets and others) from Antjie Krog's volume of poetry Kleur kom nooit alleen nie (Colour never comes on its own). In a previous article the relation between two Dumas paintings and the Krog poems were discussed. This article focuses on intertextual relations between the series of sonnets by Krog and Picasso's etching number 313 of the 347 Suite. The sonnets are true sgraffito - the poet not only takes into account and deconstructs the etching as such, but, drawing on feminist technical terminology and feminist practices, also exposes the underlying subtext of the etching. The increasing degree of abstraction which is a feature of the poems could well be seen as an ironic appropriation of Picasso's most well-known painting technique, cubism.
