Body, text and paratext in Antjie Krog's Body BereftThe cover of Antjie Krog's latest volume of poetry bears a confrontational photograph, by the internationally acclaimed photographer David Goldblatt, showing an ageing woman's naked upper body. This article will focus in the first instance on the cover and title as paratexts, and on how both cover and title act as thresholds of interpretation. The visual discourse of the cover photograph will be discussed, especially the manner in which the image/text converges with the naked ageing body as its subject. A second focus will be on selected poems which present the volume's central thematic concern, which Krog articulates as trying to find ""(t)he vocabulary of ageing : How did one master it? More importantly : Where did one find it? What did it consist of?"" (2007:39). This article will illustrate the implicit interaction between key poems and the image/text in the creation of a valid ""vocabulary of aging"".
