The training and practices of the teacher as an artistIn this essay it is argued that education exhibits more of an artistic that a scientific nature, and that the educator should rather be an artist than a presenter following a specific recipe. The interactive, idiosyncratic nature of events within and about the classroom requires of the teacher to be able to take instant decisions with far-reaching implications. Harmonious, aesthetically satisfying classes of which all the components are seamlessly integrated are the commission of the pedagogic artist. Within this context the undergraduate training of teachers has shown shortcomings for decades. Teachers should be taught and allowed to put their own intuitive hallmark on educational events and in the process promulgate their own interpretations of reality. Revolutionary thought and action are required to improve the situation.
