Abstract

So far, (1975) by Anna M. Louw has been read mostly as a novel that is firmly embedded in the (farm novel) tradition and focusing on Christian values, especially the Seven Deadly Sins. When studied from a different viewpoint, however, it appears that subtle but structural references to San culture and literature undermine this interpretation. The ambiguous San discourse offers an alternative to strict binary oppositions like good and evil; past and present; and centre and margin.
