Abstract

In this article the author attempts to provide an alternative perspective on Schoeman's prize-winning novel 'n Ander land (1984) and to read it within a theoretical framework based on the work of Sedgwick. The article examines to what extent Schoeman (whose texts are not overtly preoccupied with sexuality) depicts male-male homosocial interactions between the subject of the novel, Versluis, and the other male characters in the novel. Following Sedgwick and Judith Butler the aim is also to examine to what extent the subject interprets certain gender roles and assumes identities while interacting with others.
