Abstract

The purpose of this explorative, qualitative study was to explore fathers' perceptions of how they and other fathers should be involved in the lives of their sons. The participants in this study were married, coloured fathers of boys in Grade 7 who lived with those sons and the sons' biological mothers. The participants, divided into three focus groups, were asked an open question. The data were analysed by means of the Atlas.ti program. On the basis of Lamb, Pleck, Charnov and Levine's (1987) description of fathers' involvement and the data analysis, content could be given to the themes of . According to the results, the fathers' is the most important component of their involvement. This entails carrying out tasks relating to bringing up, disciplining and protecting their sons, being a role model for them, providing for nutritional and other financial needs, providing religious guidance and offering support with school work. Engagement entails that the fathers should interact with their sons, have faith in them and also show an interest in their activities. An indication of caring also includes the importance of physical contact and displays of love. Lastly, the findings show that fathers should be accessible, spend time with their sons and support them. The findings of this study fill a gap in the literature on this topic and can be applied meaningfully in the development of parental guidance programmes.
