Abstract

Taking into account that many churches in Europe and even in South Africa are losing members, it seems as if the traditional Christian theology has lost its credibility within the ranks of certain groups and had to make room for reason. Reason pushed all mythologies out the window and locked the soul out of all scientific discussions, only to become god itself. Today, there is a quest for new mythologies, or value systems (vMEME). According to Walsh (2007) and Campbell (2008) the myths that previously provided the guidelines for the conduct of life, are irrelevant today and we therefore need a new myth - a grand, unifying story of the cosmos. Films have replaced the Bible as the moral guide for many people and the mythmakers of our time are the filmmakers, who use their art to open the door to the "other side". Myths have mystical, cosmological, sociological, and psychological functions and depict a "journey of the hero" to find the prize and bring it back to the group. When a film like grabs the attention of people worldwide and the content has a mystical slant one can assume that we have something special. It cannot be dismissed as a "Dances with wolves in space". An avatar is a manifestation, or the incarnation, of the Divine on earth - particularly the Hindu god Vishnu in a human form like Krishna or Rama. The theme of the film is exactly that of mankind being a manifestation of the divine. James Cameron, the director and scriptwriter, has created a new myth and this article looks at myths and films to analyse in order to illustrate that films can indeed create new myths that can move people to consider selfrealisation.
