Abstract

The subject of this article is aspects of the work of André Groenewald, a writer of popular literature in the 1950s and 1960s. The focus is on those aspects of his work that can be described as "innovative" in the Afrikaans tradition at the time, but which were not registered as such by the Afrikaans literary criticism system. It is argued that there is a need for a more systematic investigation of Afrikaans popular literature, and developments therein.
