Abstract

The Westar Institute and the Jesus Seminar were established in 1985 through the initiatives of Robert Funk. The main aim was to promote religious literacy in the USA. Civil religion in the USA is characterised by fundamentalism and conservative evangelicalism and the second wave of fundamentalism, which rose in 1970, is not only stronger than the previous one, it is also characterised by involvement in national politics. The current form of fundamentalism is going hand in hand with American imperialism. To assess whether the institute and the seminar were successful in their endeavours, one has to take account of the broader social and political context. The Jesus Seminar's research into the historical Jesus was not merely an academic project. The results of the research, the publications of Polebridge Press and the "On the road" seminars have contributed without any doubt to discussions concerning the role of religion in society.
