An interesting series of case studies in the Medical Journal of Australia highlights an important problem for those looking after the elderly - delusions of para-site infestation. Drs Linda Le and Peter Gonski 1 describe several cases, two of which are outlined. The first patient was an 88-year-old man who had a 12-month history of seeing insects attacking his legs and crawling along the floor of his house. He described them as 4 cm long, black and white bugs with beaks which pecked at his legs causing wounds. He reported a sharp, stinging sensation which alerted him to their presence.
