Extracted from text ... A FRIEND IN NIED? NIED stands (in US legal parlance) for 'negligent infliction of emotional distress'. It was used in a recent court case in California, where Nita Bird, suffering from stage III ovarian cancer, was admitted to hospital for the placement of a catheter to facilitate chemotherapy, a simple outpatient procedure which should have taken only about 20 minutes. According to the court record, 'At some point during this placement procedure, Bird's subclavian artery and subclavian vein were transected and serious complications occurred'. A thoracic surgeon was called and surgery was performed which allegedly saved Bird's life.
