Statistics have shown that at a conservative estimate 50% of the elderly staying in nursing facilities are incontinent. The normal process of micturition is dependent on a complex integration of neurological, muscular and psychological factors: When the bladder fills, the detrusor muscle must relax. Both the internal and external urinary sphincters remain closed and in order to maintain continence, the pelvic floor muscles must be sufficiently strong.
