I remember getting sugar lumps with pink vaccine while at school in Bulawayo, and then encountered a girl in my class in the UK with one leg in callipers after suffering polio in infancy. Fortunately, these visible stigmata of the disease are now rare, thanks to what looks like very successful vaccination campaigns. However, we are still a fair way from the goal of eradicating polio.
