Extracted from text ... 284 AIDS OVERVIEW HIV infection is a reality in children in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2000, 22% of women presenting to antenatal clinics in the public sector in South Africa were HIV-positive. In the absence of any intervention, mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) is between 20% and 30%. Mixed breast and other feeding will add another 15% of infected children. The present monotherapy regimens to prevent MTCT will reduce rates of vertical transmission - at best to 12%. In areas of high prevalence, up to 50% of paediatric admissions in secondary and tertiary hospitals are HIV related, with concomitant high mortality and ..
