Joint damage occurs early in RA. <br>Initiation of disease-modifying therapy within 3 months of onset is crucial. <br>Patients with suspected RA should be evaluated by a rheumatologist within 3 months of onset of symptoms. <br>Low-dose glucocorticoids are very effective at relieving symptoms of RA. <br>Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs retard or halt radiographic progression of the disease. <br>Methotrexate is most often selected for initial therapy. <br>Important co-morbid conditions in RA patients are coronary artery disease and osteoporosis.
