Fortunately, rabies is a relatively rare disease in South Africa, although the National Institute for Communicable Diseases received several possible reports of the disease in July and August 2005. These were mainly in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo. However, in Britain, rabies is only known as a disease contracted by travellers or by infection with the European bat Lyssavirus. India possibly has one of the highest incidences of rabies in the world.
