Extracted from text ... A person who is HIV-positive will require antiretroviral treatment at the stage when his or her infection has progressed to an advanced stage of disease. This point in the progression of the disease is signalled by the onset of a major opportunistic infection or when the CD4 count drops to below 200 cells per millilitre of blood. At this stage of progress of the disease only antiretroviral drugs that inhibit the replication of the virus can arrest further progression of the infection and prevent death.
