Extracted from text ... Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is relatively easily diagnosed and treated. However, COPD is underdiagnosed and the clinical importance of the disease is often underestimated. Far from being a hopeless diagnosis, the disease is treatable. Cigarette smoking causes at least 80% of COPD, and continuing smoking accounts for about 80% of associated mortality. Stopping smoking improves the rate at which lung function is lost in patients with mild COPD and reduces symptoms of cough and airways reactivity, making it the single greatest priority in all COPD patients.
